It was originally built for Eugene Oberdorfer, a prominent Atlanta businessman, military officer, and leader in the American Jewish community. He served as a professor of military science at Emory University during World War I and later as adjutant general of Georgia.

The home was later purchased by Colonel Blake Ragsdale Van Leer, who moved in with his family while serving as the fifth president of Georgia Tech — the first engineer to lead the institution — from 1944 until his death in 1956. During his tenure, he oversaw the historic admission of women as regular undergraduate students for the first time. He is honored today through Georgia Tech's Blake R. Van Leer Building.
